The “Gentleman of Jazz” will make his annual Monmouth visit soon.

Western Oregon University and the City of Monmouth are co-hosting a free evening of jazz in Main Street Park, beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 31.

The music features Mel Brown and Friends, followed by the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. The event kicks off the annual Mel Brown Summer Jazz Workshop held at WOU.

The event also includes a beer and wine garden, sponsored by Main Street Pub.

An Oregon icon in jazz, drummer Mel Brown has been labeled the “Gentleman of Jazz,” with a career spanning over 40 years.  In recognition of his contributions to the cultural life of Oregon, Mel received the Governor’s Arts Award in 2002.  In addition to his achievements as a musician, Mel leads the WOU Summer Jazz Workshop where participants have direct access to many of Oregon’s finest jazz performers and teachers.

The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra represents the future generation of jazz stars through a program that selects the best and brightest high school jazz musicians in the country.
