A Western Oregon University teacher will host a flute masterclass and concert on Aug. 9 at Uptown Music.

A high-caliber music teacher usually leads a masterclass, which is a technically focused class, said Jim Nardi, Uptown Music owner. This class, held 6 to 8:30 p.m., is open to musicians of all levels.

John Savage’s flute-playing is featured on Andrew Hill Big Band’s “A Beautiful Day” album. Savage got his master’s degree and doctorate at New York University.
Savage’s class and concert costs $20 for a student, elementary school through college. Cost is $30 for an adult. Space is limited to 25 people.
As usual, on the third Wednesday of the month there will be an open mic and jam session at Uptown Music, 3827 River Road N. Open mic is 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17 this month. It is free to attend.

To register for the class, call Uptown Music at (503) 393-4437 or go to www.uptownmusiconline.com.
