‘Tis the season to sing along!

Community members assemble to create an small orchestra to accompany the community choir

What’s the best thing about going to a small college in a small town? The cute, community involvement during the holidays! I seriously only thought community sing-alongs were only in movies! I am so glad I was able to go to Independence’s Christmas Carol Community Sing-Along, it was something I’m hoping to go to every year I’m here at Western.

This was the first year the local community held an event like this; a year in the making, I would say it was a success!! The community was invited to rehearse select pieces from Handel’s Messiah every Sunday a month before the sing-along. The choral director from Western helped the community prepare these pieces at these rehearsals and conducted the community at the event.

One of my favorite parts of the evening was when the “Three Kings” sang their trademark song, all dressed up! There were a few kids in the audience that had priceless reactions to the Three Kings’ song. This performance broke up the cycle of the audience singing every song, and gave our voices a nice break while our ears could continue to enjoy the holiday spirit!

My roommate, who joined me on this festive night said later, “It was great to see the community coming together and singing, whether they knew the songs or not, it was easy to feel OK just making it up.” We had a lot of fun watching the little kids pretending to know all the words to every song.

I can’t wait to see what else this wonderful area has to show the holiday spirit!
