“You never know what you have until it’s gone” is a quote that can be true for a lot of things…even the Health and Wellness Center (HWC). If you are like me then you know when it is time for a break from school, it means a break from anything that requires you to get out of bed. Having my membership to the gym being paid through my tuition kind of gives me an obligation or incentive to go and use ALL of its resources. There are actually a lot of things to do there. Some of my friends spend hours everyday there and sometimes I think they live there.
There are a few classes that the HWC offers to its members. One of the most popular classes is Zumba. It’s a couple nights a week and some of the people I know that have gone there really loved it. If you want more of a workout, they have a Zumba tone. Other classes that they offer are: Choreographed Cardio, All about Abs, Total Tone, Pilates, Spinning, Spinning with training wheels, and Yoga. They each last about 50 minutes and only cost about 6 dollars!
I myself like to play a little basketball and the HWC has 4 of those. If It gets busy downstairs they have some upstairs courts to play on. They also double as a volleyball court so If i ever want to meet up with some friends we can ask for them to set up the nets. There is also a wide selection of weights and machines. This means you can literally work out any part of your body that you can think of.
If you want to go and just run there are a couple ways to do that. There’s a track on the second floor that overlooks the basketball courts and when you’re running it is pretty nice to see all the competitiveness going on on the courts below while you listen to music through your headphones or the treadmills and elliptical machines. Each treadmill and elliptical has a tv monitor with cable on it so you can watch whatever you like, which I think is pretty cool.
Rock Climbing is also another neat thing that the HWC offers. Before you can go up, you are required to take a safety course, to make sure you don’t drop your climbing partner or anything. The rock wall is pretty fun if you’ve never done it before and takes a lot of courage if you are afraid of heights, but is a lot of fun to try with your friends. There is also an aquatic center and classes that they offer there as well. It has specific hours but also has a muscle relaxer pool if you want to relax after a tough workout.
One of the HWC’s biggest attractions is the intramural sports it offers. For a small fee you can be put on a soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball team and more throughout a term. It is a great way to meet new people and play a sport you really like.
It is one thing to read about the Health and Wellness Center and it’s another thing to go for yourself and find out what you like for it yourself. So, go out there and find out more of what you’re paying for in your student fees!
