MONMOUTH — One of Western Oregon University’s most celebrated athletes is returning home — if only for just one night.
Current NFL free agent and former WOU All-American tight end Kevin Boss will highlight what the university hopes will be a successful event at Saturday’s 27th annual Wolves Athletic Auction, the primary fundraiser for student-athlete scholarships.
“It’s absolutely huge,” Michael Feuling, WOU’s director of athletic development and sales, said of having the six-year pro as the event’s keynote speaker.
“He’s really represented the university well and having Kevin there, he’s kind of the face of the new generation of athletes that have graduated.
“… (With Kevin), a lot of the people — WOU family and friends, donors and alumni — can see the good that comes out of these student-athletes after they leave Western.”
The event — complete with dinner and silent and live auctions — is set for 5 p.m. at the Salem Convention Center, part of The Grand Hotel in downtown Salem.
Not only does the ticket price — $65 per person or $500 for a table of eight — go toward student-athlete scholarships, so do the two auctions, that will feature items such as sports memorabilia, vacation packages, athletic event tickets and much more.
That’s because, according to Feuling, the event is already paid for in full with the help of plenty of generous sponsorships.
With event costs out of the way, “For the first time in the history of the auction, every penny spent will go directly toward scholarships,” Feuling said.
To hammer that point home, the auction will feature the “Leader of the Pack” award-winners — one athlete chosen by the coaches for each of WOU’s 11 teams — given to the student-athlete who best represents the Wolves both on and off the field.
“We’re trying to make them front and center,” Feuling said of WOU’s student-athletes.
The event has sold more tickets than its attendance from 2012, but tickets are still available and will be for sale at the door the day of the event for a cost of $75 per person.
