A week of jazz in Monmouth

The Gentleman of Jazz, Portland-based musician and WOU professor Mel Brown, is in town next week for the annual Mel Brown Summer Jazz Workshop.

MONMOUTH — A free jazz concert that will kick off the annual Mel Brown Summer Jazz Workshop at Western Oregon University takes place Sunday beginning at 5 p.m. at Main Street Park in Monmouth.

Sponsored by WOU and the city of Monmouth, the concert will feature performances by Stan Bock’s New Traditions, playing classic jazz in a grooving, danceable style; the Jessie Marquez Band, featuring Latin jazz; and Mel Brown and Friends.

Food and a beer and wine garden sponsored by Main Street Pub will be available onsite.

The Mel Brown Summer Jazz Workshop is scheduled Aug. 4-10 on the WOU campus. The mission of the workshop is to improve each participant’s performance skills and increase their knowledge and appreciation for jazz.

Participants perform in both large and small jazz ensembles and attend seminars that cover various topics including theory, history, improvisation, the music business and music technology.

Participants will have direct access to many of Oregon’s finest jazz performers and teachers.
