MONMOUTH — In a fitting tribute to an avid biker, Western Oregon University is dedicating a new bike rack to former faculty member Hank Bersani.

Bersani was killed in a bicycle accident March 31, 2012, along Highway 99W.

Bersani was a special education professor at WOU for 13 years and a passionate advocate for people with developmental disabilities.

The dedication is set for Wednesday (today) from 4 to 5 p.m. on the east side of the education building.

Students in the service learning and career development program created a service learning project to honor Bersani, which resulted in the bike rack.

Mark Girod, interim dean of the College of Education and close friend of Bersani, helped to pull the ceremony together.

“Hank was a big time cyclist,” Girod said. “I’ve ridden hundreds of miles with Hank.”

Students, faculty and administration will be present to honor Bersani’s memory and dedication to disability rights.
