MONMOUTH — To celebrate 50 years of “Doctor Who,” the BBC TV series started in 1963, the Western Oregon University Bookstore will host a party Wednesday (today) and Thursday at 1 p.m. at the bookstore.

Mara Hoaglin, web specialist and head cashier, built two large displays for the occasion: one of the Time and Relative Dimension in Space, or the Tardis, and a Dalek, an evil robot-alien.

A quiz will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Whoever wins the quiz will have first pick of taking home either the Tardis or the Dalek for use in his or her own Day of the Doctor party. The winner of the Thursday quiz will take home whichever is left.

“We’ll walk around to make sure people aren’t using phones or talking,” Hoaglin said. “You’ll get an extra point on your quiz for dressing as a character or even wearing a ‘Doctor Who’ hat or T-shirt.”

The quiz will consist of five questions testing individual’s knowledge of the Time Lord and will cover both the old series, which ran from 1963 until 1989, and the new one, relaunched in 2005.

“I can’t tell the questions, but I’m trying to make it pretty difficult so we have two clear winners,” Hoaglin said.

She is a fan of the show, and prefers the new series to the old.

“I feel like the story lines are kind of complex,” Hoaglin said. “There are so many geeky things about it that are cool. It’s really creative and fun to watch. Quirky characters add humor to the show.”

The 10th doctor, played by David Tennant, is her favorite.

Along with “Doctor Who” trivia, free snacks, door prizes, a raffle and discounted “Doctor Who” merchandise will be available.
