MONMOUTH — Acclaimed American trumpet player Dave Douglas will perform Saturday at Western Oregon University as the 2013-14 Smith Fine Arts Series season draws to a close.
Douglas, a prolific trumpeter, composer and music educator from New York City, will perform with the Western Hemisphere Orchestra during the concert scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at Rice Auditorium on the WOU campus.
Douglas, who was called “the unassuming king of independent jazz” by DownBeat magazine, celebrated his 50th birthday in 2013 with a tour designed to stop in each of the 50 states. He continues to tour in support of a number of projects, including the 2013 full-length album release, “Time Travel,” by the Dave Douglas Quintet.
According to his record label, Greenleaf Music, Douglas’ unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award and two Grammy nominations.
Douglas has developed his work for several unique ensembles with whom he’s currently active, including his new quintet, an electric sextet (Keystone) and Sound Prints Quintet, co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano, who performed in Monmouth in April 2013 as part of the Smith Fine Arts Series.
Since 2005, Douglas has operated his own record label, releasing his own recordings as well as albums by other artists in the jazz idiom. Through his artist-friendly approach and innovative practices, he continues to prove himself a pioneer in new music marketing and delivery methods for the jazz world and among artist-run labels.
Tickets for Saturday’s concert are still available through the Rice Auditorium box office.
