Graduates: What to Expect at Commencement

Commencement is approaching quickly! The actual day does have a set schedule and there are places that us graduates need to be at certain times. While you’ve hopefully been receiving emails regarding how to sign up for graduation, here’s what to do on the actual day. Want more information or need to send your family some details? There’s lots of information at the WOU Commencement website.

8 to 10 a.m.

This will be your final opportunity to pick up caps and gowns from the student bookstore if you haven’t already.

10 a.m.

You HAVE to be on campus and lined up to check in at 10 a.m. The earlier you get here, the better. Graduates will be lining up in the New PE building to check-in. Once you do, you’ll receive a card and then you’ll line up according to your assigned number. This is also the time when the Registrar’s office will be handing out honors cords (congrats to those who are graduating with honors!) Just as a heads up, your tassel should be worn on the right up until you walk across that stage and receive your diploma, that’s when you can move it over to the left.

10:40 a.m.

At this point, anyone who isn’t in line to check in won’t be allowed to walk at graduation. So like I said, the earlier you get here, the better.

10:50 a.m.

Next, the processional line will begin but don’t worry, faculty marshals will be directing you to your seats.

11 a.m.

Commencement begins! You’ll get directions on when you’re supposed to stand, so don’t worry about needing to know what to do. Once you stand, you’ll follow your row in a line to the ramp at the north end of the stage. When you’re walking across the stage, hand your card to the reader or the reader’s assistant so they have your name. After this, each name will be read as you continue across the stage. Once you’re across the stage, you’ll walk down the ramp and pause for the photographer but you won’t stop. Next, you’ll return to your assigned seat until the ceremony is done. And that’s it!

1:30 p.m. and Onward

All in all, commencement usually lasts around 2.5 hours. Once you leave the field, you can go to the Commencement Reception in the Grove, weather permitting, or the Pacific Room of the Werner University Center.
I just want to say a big congratulations to everyone who is graduating this year. I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited to be graduating and moving on to the next chapter in my life. We’ve all worked so hard and this day is a celebration of all of that hard work.
Make sure to grab pictures of this awesome day too. WOU will have a Snapchat Geofilter for the day so take advantage and take as many selfies as you possibly can. To find some good places to take pictures of you in your gown, be sure to keep an eye on WOU’s Instagram in the next couple weeks for ideas. We’ll also have a hashtag to use regarding graduation so be sure to tag #wougrad on social media!
