Michelle “Chelle” Batchelor, the new Dean of Library and Academic Innovation

This summer, Western Oregon University welcomed the new Dean of Library and Academic Innovation Michelle “Chelle” Batchelor.

Her work at WOU will be focused on innovative academic resources that meet the demands of current and future students as well as support for

faculty members who teach online courses. Batchelor had most recently been the interim associate dean of libraries for Research and

Learning Services at the University of Washington. Read more about her at

Wes Pifer, men’s basketball head coach.


Also, WOU Athletics welcomed three new faces to the staff since April. Welcome to campus:

Wes Pifer, men’s basketball head coach. Pifer most recently worked at Northern Arizona University, where he served as associate head coach on the Lumberjacks’ staff.

Brian Kortz, director of Athletics communications. Kortz brings a strong college athletic and media background to the job having served in college athletics for more than a decade, most recently at Fort Lewis College in Colorado.

Lindsey Lavender enters her first year as the head cheer coach in the 2019-20 season.
Lavender is a WOU alum, receiving her degree in exercise science and a minor in health. She also currently serves as a Certified Medical Assistant in the Student Health & Counseling Center at Western.
