Weekly 5: Ways to Visit WOU

Winter break is a great time to tour colleges you may be considering for next fall. Though the leaves may be sparse and rain may be in the forecast, the gap in classes gives extra time to explore and narrow down your list of dream schools. Whether you’re near Monmouth, or states (or even an ocean) away, we’ve got a variety of ways you can visit campus to decide whether Western Oregon University is right for you.

A bonus reason to come visit? We have a $1,000 campus visitation scholarship for anyone who comes to one of our campus tours or visitation programs and enrolls for the fall. As long as you visit by February 1 and make sure to complete the campus visitation form when you swing by the Admissions office, you can get a thousand bucks knocked off of your tuition bull just by visiting campus.

Want another bonus? If you visit on a weekday, you can apply for admissions and get an instant decision with our Instant Wolf program. Learn more here about what you need to bring to make sure we can give you a quick decision.

One of the things we’ve heard most often from students who have chosing WOU is that their visit to campus is what helped them make the ultimate decision to choose WOU. They could easily see themselves here on our beautiful campus. Maybe that will be you too!

1. Join one of our daily tours.
During our winter break (Dec. 16, 2019-Jan. 5, 2020), we will offer tours every weekday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (except for Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, when campus is closed). These tours are 90 minutes long and take you through the residence halls. You can drop into these tours and don’t need to make a reservation. Though, if you’d like to meet with faculty or staff of a specific department while on campus, you can fill out the individual visit request form. We even offer tours in Spanish and American Sign Language. Just email visitcor@wou.edu to make arrangements.

Thinking about making a night of it? Contact Trina Horsey in our Conferences and Events Services department to ask about staying overnight in one of the residence halls and get a true taste for dorm life.

2. Sign up for a special visitation event.

We have numerous special events specifically for prospective students each year. In January and February, we have several events open for registration.

January 11: Future WOU Wolf Day para familias interesadas en Western Oregon University (WOU). The day’s events will be conducted in Spanish. The program is intended for seniors who are admitted to WOU and students who are still exploring their college options.

January 17: Winter Application Workshop. Looking for support in completing your undergraduate application for admissions? WOU Admissions staff will be on hand to answer questions. You’ll also receive an overview of scholarships, a campus tour and free lunch.

January 24: Transfer Student Day. Will you be transferring to WOU for spring or fall? This is a great opportunity to visit campus and learn about your opportunities. You’ll even get the chance to meet some faculty – maybe even who you’ll be working with once you get to campus in the fall. Students may be eligible for a Transfer Day scholarship drawing for a $2,000 scholarship as well!

February 1: Winter Preview Day. This is the most comprehensive visit experience you can participate in during winter term. At Preview Day, you and your family can learn about financial aid, housing, academic programs, and much more. Also, if you participate in Preview Day, your application fee is waived and you may be eligible to enter a scholarship drawing.

February 17: President’s Day Visit. This event combines campus tours with an application workshop and lunch at our dining hall.

3. Visit our online tour resources.

If you’re out of state or just can’t make it to Monmouth, we have several places online where you can get a feel for campus and what it would be like to live here. We have a two-part video tour, led by WOU students, that shows you around (part one and part two).

Maybe you’d rather poke around and get a good sense for the residence halls to see your options. We have a video tour of the residence halls here. We also have virtual reality tours of rooms in each building and some other spaces like Valsetz Dining Hall. Check them out and move around the spaces on your own. You could even start imagining how you’d decorate your own room.

4. Come to a campus event and wander around.

Combine your campus tour with an event of interest to you so you can see campus and get a taste for student life. Men’s and women’s basketball seasons are in full swing if you’d like to check out an athletics event. Over winter break, men’s basketball will be playing on campus Dec. 14, Dec. 20, Dec. 31, and Jan. 2. Women’s basketball is at home Dec. 16, Jan. 2 and Jan. 4. We have lots of other events you can attend throughout the year-just visit our campus event calendar to see what’s going on.

5. Visit with your school group.

WOU hosts a lot of regional and statewide events for high schoolers, like the Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference, speech and debate tournaments, band and choir competitions, and more. Check to see if your high school is coming to WOU and see if you can tag along.

We hope to see you and your family on campus over winter break!
