Get Moving! How to Safely Exercise During Winter Term

With the dreary weather and online classes of winter term, it can be easy to forgo exercise, fresh air, and moving around.

However, WOU has some phenomenal resources available for students, including Campus Recreation. Here’s some information regarding the HWC, fitness classes, and how to get moving on your own. 

While the HWC’s facilities are currently closed, they are offering fitness equipment rentals, starting January 11: “‘Rec where u room’ fitness equipment rentals will be available for pick-up in the Peter Courtney Health and Wellness Center by appointment in IMLeagues.”

Campus Recreation also holds several weekly virtual fitness classes on Instagram Live. Yoga is offered Monday and Wednesday, Circuit Training is offered Monday and Wednesday, and Pilates is offered Tuesday and Thursday. Yoga and Pilates classes are from 5:45 – 6:30, and Circuit Training classes are from 6:45 – 7:30. Visit their Instagram profile for more information. 

Students can also get out and get moving on their own. Here’s a few ideas to responsibly get some exercise this winter term. 

  1. Take a brisk walk around your neighborhood
  2. Check out the beautiful Oregon scenery with a physically distanced hike
  3. Take a quick break from classes to do a couple jumping jacks to get your heart racing
  4. Jog in place while watching Netflix
  5. Take a bike ride around town, weather permitting
  6. Follow along with an exercise video 

The Courtney Center facilities are currently closed, per county-specific guidelines from the Oregon Health Authority and governor’s office. Check the campus rec homepage for the most recent updates.

Whatever you decide to do, it’s important to get some exercise to better your mood, your productivity, and your overall health.
